The Dodge Challenger Hellcat is unapologetically a heavy-hitting, big-fisted muscle car. It can put down the likes of the Mustang GT500, Corvette Z06, and even the blisteringly quick Tesla P85D on the drag strip. But how does it fare against a ‘supercar,’ specifically, Japan’s hallowed Nissan GT-R Nismo?
Frankly, quite well. Two of these muscled-up performers met at the ZMax Dragway in Concord, North Carolina early this month, and squared off during a test and tune session. Both cars were said to be completely stock, aside from Nitto 555R drag radials on the Hellcat. Take a look at the speedy pass… it’s close.
Somewhat surprisingly, it’s the rear-drive Hellcat that got the jump off the line on the all-wheel-drive Nismo. The GT-R eventually reeled in the Challenger at the halfway point, but it was the Hellcat that nipped the quarter mile in 11.18 seconds, a mere tenth faster than its rival and at almost exactly the same speed. According to the video’s creator, the pair ran multiple times throughout the course of the afternoon, each time trading wins back and forth.
Opinions differ as to whether the Nissan GT-R is actually a supercar – it surely has beaten some of the world’s best. The Hellcat Challenger is most certainly not what you’d typically call a ‘supercar’, but on a drag strip, it can run right with the best of them.
