The Best Hybrids and Electric Vehicles of 2015

Best Hybrid Cars

1: Chevrolet Volt:

Despite the Volt’s eco-minded image, it’s actually gratifying to drive—just don’t expect mind-blowing acceleration. For 2016, the Volt has an all-new powertrain that offers increased all-electric range, greater efficiency, and better acceleration. Its all-electric range is an estimated 50 miles; after that, its gas engine kicks in to recharge the battery and keep you going. It may now have five seats, but the extra seat is too small for most. Charge times are 13 hours on 120V and 4.5 on 240V.

2:Ford C-Max:

The C-Max is based on the frisky Focus, making it an economical, fun-to-drive alternative to the typical hybrid snooze fest. Its steering is firm and communicative; a four-cylinder and a pair of electric motors provide decent motivation. The Energi, the plug-in version, ups battery capacity to extend the electric-only range, but gets 2 mpg less in the city and 1 mpg less on the highway than the C-Max hybrid. An updated C-Max has debuted in Europe; expect it to be sold here with few changes.
3:Chevrolet Spark EV:

The Spark EV dials in some much needed fun by improving just about everything wrong with its gas-powered counterpart. The gutsy electric motor and 1-speed direct-drive transmission make an enthusiastic pair; handling is pleasantly balanced and responsive with sharper steering. Plus, clever packaging of the lithium-ion battery pack has allowed the Spark EV to retain all of the passenger and storage space of the regular car. Unfortunately, the Spark EV is available only in limited markets.

4:Fiat 500E:

With its tiny size, zippy handling, and an EPA range of 87 miles, the 500E is a fine city car—as long as you don’t need to go anywhere else. The interior is cramped, with an awkward driving position and a rear seat that is best reserved for short people and short distances. On the upside, it is a bit quicker, smoother, and quieter than the gas-powered 500, and the 500E even comes with free credits towards a conventionally powered rental-car when you need to go on longer trips.

5:BMW i8:

With swan-wing doors, a shark-nose grille, and a supercar stance, the i8 plug-in hybrid is a truly revolutionary vehicle. The interior seats four in trappings worthy of an Ian Schrager hotel. A turbocharged three-cylinder engine teams with two electric motors for a combined 357 hp; the i8 hits 60 mph faster than an M3. Top speed is 155 mph, but fuel economy is less than 30 mpg. Handling is agile and steering sharp; braking is great for any car, let alone a hybrid. Overall, it’s quite an effort.
